A MOLD TEST/Assessment
is a 6 step process:

Story1. 1. Story:

The process begins with a call, text or email from a client expressing concern over an indoor air quality issue. “The Story” is the narrative from the client discussing when the concerns regarding mold began. What challenges have arisen ‘possibly, as a result of mold exposure. How well does the house divert water in the event of heavy rains/snowfall? When was the water leak? Etc., etc. This conversation may take place prior to or at the time of assessment.

2. Sight:

Most homeowners can identify visible mold however an assessor from Mold Testing Long Island NY knows where to look whether it be the basement floor structure, under a sink or on the backside of a door. The pattern of mold growth assists in telling the story of how long and how severe the mold problem is.

3. Smell:

Is there a malodor associated with mold growth? MVOC stands for microbial volatile organic compounds. These compounds emit a strong “musty odor”. They are  associated with mold growth.

4. Survey:

Not only do Mold Testing Long island NY mold assessors have an expertise in mycology they also possess an expertise in building science. Mold requires food and water to grow and finding evidence of present or past water penetration or leakage is critical to a thorough mold assessment. The assessor will use instruments such as a moisture meter, and thermal imaging camera to find evidence of present elevated moisture or previous water losses. Additionally, staining, buckling, decaying , and warped building materials all assist in the analysis.

5. Sample:

Air and or swab samples are taken with guidance from the client. Sampling is as much of an art as it is science. Ventilation, location, and the extent of the perceived issue can all impact the outcome of the lab results from an air sample. Sampling is a crucial part of an assessment but most effective when in sync with the balance of the other five S’s. It is possible to get a false negative in an air sample.

6. Solutions:

Successful mold remediation will eliminate the mold. However if the underlying cause of the mold growth is not addressed it will grow back. Solutions may include the following:
Probe a wall cavity
Install dehumidification
Clean the HVAC system
Regrade the soil adjacent to the house to create a positive pitch.
Repair the gutter system
Waterproof the crawlspace
